About Bergamo

Known for

Città Alta

Known for

Venetian walls

Known for

Cappella Colleoni

Bergamo is two towns stacked on top of each other: the walled Città Alta, nestled among hills, and the newer Città Bassa spread across the plain below. The Bergamo Alps rise straight behind them to the north, and the lakes of Como and Iseo are close enough for a day out, so weekends here are easily spent between mountain and water.

The Mura Venete hold the upper town together, the great Venetian defences listed by UNESCO in 2017, and inside them life gathers around the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, the Cappella Colleoni and the Duomo di Bergamo, while the Accademia Carrara keeps the city's art. Bergamo is the second most visited city in Lombardy after Milan, yet it keeps its own rhythm, and its own dialect, in which the town is called Bèrghem.

The detail that stays with you is Porta San Giacomo at dusk, set in the walls, with the lights of the Città Bassa coming on underneath.
