On a bench in the Park 1000-lecia, Bełchatów feels nothing like the industrial giant its name suggests. Yet the Elektrownia Bełchatów is the largest coal-fired power station in Europe, and thousands of people work for the company that runs it and the coal mine beside it.
The town lies in central Poland, on the Bełchatów Upland by the small Rakówka river, south of Łódź and west of Piotrków Trybunalski. Its housing estates grew quickly alongside the mine, and the town planted parks, squares and playgrounds between them. The Kościół Narodzenia Najświętszej Maryi Panny and the Muzeum Regionalne recall an older, smaller place that was a town, lost its charter, and won it back again. Skra Bełchatów brings national volleyball titles home, and the local krówka, a soft milk fudge, is protected as a traditional regional food.
Picture the Ławeczka z jabłkiem on a summer evening, a paper bag of krówki on the seat beside you.
