Bari Vecchia
Adriatic port
Bari faces the Adriatic from a small peninsula between two harbours, and the old town packed onto that spit of land is where the city began. Known in antiquity as Barium, it has been a port for as long as anyone has written about it, and today it is the largest city on the Adriatic, a university town and the city of Saint Nicholas.
For Baresi, belonging comes with the sound of the old dialect and the narrow streets of Bari Vecchia, where the Basilica di San Nicola and the cathedral of San Sabino stand a few corners apart. South of the old town the Murat quarter opens out on a grid of straight streets, with a promenade along the sea, via Sparano for shopping and the Teatro Petruzzelli for the big evenings. Beyond lie the newer districts built in the 1960s and 1970s.
At night the old town around the Castello Normanno-Svevo di Bari fills with people, and further along the shore the Faro Punta San Cataldo blinks out over the dark water.
