Ballerup Museum

Inside Ballerup Super Arena, the velodrome has hosted the UCI Track Cycling World Championships more than once, a long way from the farming village Ballerup used to be. Its name joins a man called Balli to the old word torp, a settlement founded by people moving out from an older village, and by the end of the nineteenth century it was a stop on the road and the railway to Frederikssund, with a church, a mill, an inn and a hotel.

What makes Ballerup different is how much of its past still shows. Around the town lie ancient mounds such as Studerhøj, Baunehøj and Grønhøj, and Ballerup Museum keeps the story of the village that helped keep Copenhagen supplied with milk, which earned the area the nickname Mælkevejen, the Milky Way. Denmark's first IKEA opened here too.

Whether you swam at East Kilbride Badet or cheered from the velodrome stands, this is your corner of Copenhagen's north-western suburbs, and it is worth wearing.
