UNESCO World Heritage

Baden-Baden sits in a valley on the north-western edge of the Black Forest, on the small river Oos, ten kilometres east of the Rhine and the French border. Hot springs rise here from deep beneath Florentine Hill, and the town has been famous for them since the Romans called the place Aquae.

The Oos divides the town in two. The old town climbs the hillside on its right bank, with the Neues Schloss above the Roman bath ruins, while the great spa buildings of the nineteenth century, the Kurhaus and the Trinkhalle among them, spread out on the other side. To the east the slopes rise into the forest towards the Badener Höhe, the highest point in town; to the west the land falls away into the Upper Rhine Plain. In 2021 Baden-Baden became part of the Great Spa Towns of Europe on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

Growing up here means knowing the Roman bath ruins as a school trip, the walk along the Oos as a Sunday routine and the casino as part of the scenery. This map holds every one of those places.
