Bad Kreuznach sits where the Ellerbach flows into the lower Nahe, between the Hunsrück, Rhenish Hesse and the North Palatine Uplands. People have lived here for a very long time: there was a Celtic settlement before the Romans came, and the Roman vicus took its name, as the legend has it, from a Celt called Cruciniac.
What makes the town unique is the Alte Nahebrücke, a medieval bridge from around 1300 that still carries houses, one of the few bridges like it left anywhere in the world. Add the Römerhalle, the spa town's Kurpark, the Salinental and the Kauzenburg, and you have a town shaped by many centuries. The dry, mild climate suits the vines of the Nahe wine region, known for its Riesling, Silvaner and Müller-Thurgau.
If you grew up crossing that bridge on the way into town, this map will bring every step of the walk back.
