Landgraves' castle
In the grounds of the Bad Homburger Schloss, the Weißer Turm rises above the roofs of the town. This was the seat of the Landgraves of Hesse-Homburg until the town became Prussian in 1866, and later Emperor Wilhelm II chose the castle as his summer residence.
The Spielbank Bad Homburg tells the next chapter. Founded in 1841, the casino is still called the "mother of Monte Carlo", and together with the mineral springs it turned Homburg into an internationally famous spa. Visitors came from all over Europe, and in 1912 the town was allowed to put "Bad" in front of its name. The spa trade declined after the Second World War, when the Kurhaus was badly damaged by bombs, but the springs, the park and the Erlöserkirche still give the centre its elegance.
The town lies on the southern slope of the Taunus, which locals once simply called "die Höhe", the height. Coming home along the Taunus slope and seeing the Weißer Turm on the skyline, you know you have arrived.
