The Fuggerei
Roman foundation
Medieval canals
Did you know Augsburg has a public holiday all of its own? Every 8 August the city celebrates its Hohes Friedensfest, the peace festival that gives Augsburg more statutory holidays than any other place in Germany. It suits a city with an unusually long memory: founded by the Romans in 15 BC as Augusta Vindelicorum, named after the emperor Augustus, and later home of the Fugger and Welser families, whose banking made it a centre of early capitalism.
The Fuggerei is the place that sums all this up. Founded by Jakob Fugger, it is the oldest social housing complex in the world still standing. Beyond it lie the Rathaus with its Goldener Saal and the Basilika St. Ulrich und Afra, while the city's medieval canals and water towers, fed by the Lech and the Wertach, have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2019.
Wear the Fuggerei and you carry an idea that has outlived its founder by centuries: that a wealthy city should give its poorer citizens a home.
