Canal Saint-Denis
Plaine Saint-Denis
Aubervilliers stands on gypsum-rich ground in the flat Plaine Saint-Denis, one of three communes that share the old industrial plain just north-east of Paris. The Canal Saint-Denis cuts through its western side from north to south, once lined with busy river ports and served by an industrial railway that tied the town to its factories.
What sets Aubervilliers apart is how its identity is still bound up with work and with the people who came to do it. Days start at the metro stations of Aubervilliers-Pantin-Quatre Chemins and Fort d'Aubervilliers, or further in at Mairie d'Aubervilliers since the line was extended. The three locks of the canal, the écluse d'Aubervilliers, the écluse des Quatre Chemins and the écluse des Vertus, mark the slow passage of boats, and the Forêt linéaire Nord threads a strip of green between the blocks. The Parc de la Villette and the Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie are only a short walk away.
If you grew up along the canal or still change trains at Quatre Chemins, this is your town, drawn street by street.
