Drents Museum
On the Brink, the grassy heart of Assen, the Drents Museum stands on the site of the old Marienkamp abbey, the nunnery around which the whole town grew. Only the abbey church, its grounds and a few fragments of wall remain from those religious beginnings.
Assen lies in the north of Drenthe, in a landscape of old esdorpen, Drenthe's traditional villages. The nuns came here looking for drier ground, away from the flood-prone peat near Coevorden. The town still has green on its doorstep: the woods of the Asserbos, the nature reserve of Kampsheide, and the Hunebed D16 Balloo is a reminder that people lived here when the dolmens were built. Assen is also the town of the TT Circuit, where the Dutch TT roars on the last Sunday in June, and it has won the European Green Leaf Award for 2027.
