Glacial potholes
Johannes Linnankoski
Porvoonjoki valley
Askola is best known for its glacial potholes, the giant round hollows worn into the rock of Kirnukallio, one of five rock areas in the municipality rated as nationally valuable. The Porvoonjoki river winds through rolling grain fields, people have lived in this valley without a break since the Stone Age, and eleven lakes lie scattered across the east.
Johannes Linnankosken nuoruudenkoti, the childhood home of the writer behind The Song of the Blood-Red Flower, now welcomes visitors, and the roses on the coat of arms are there for him. Beside them sits a millstone for the many mills of the parish and its well-known breads. The old mill in the cultural landscape of Vakkolankoski, the protected Prestbacka manor and the Pappilanharju nature reserve all belong to the same green river valley, and the Sankarimuistomerkki keeps the memory of local men lost in war.
Askola is one of only three municipalities in Uusimaa without a Swedish name, a quiet badge of its inland Finnish character. Johannes Linnankosken nuoruudenkoti is proof that this valley shapes the people who grow up in it, and anyone raised among these fields has their own reason to wear it.
