Summer resort
Painters' light
On the jetty where Edvard Munch painted Pikene på broen, summer visitors still gather to look out over the Ytre Oslofjord. A short walk along the shore stands Munchs hus, the house he bought in 1898 and returned to summer after summer; today it is a small museum.
What makes Åsgårdstrand different is the light. It drew painters here from the 1880s onwards, Christian Krohg and Hans Heyerdahl among them, and Munch painted the place again and again: the beach below his house, the harbour, the old Grand Hotell in a storm. The town has lived with that inheritance ever since. It is a small place, once the smallest municipality in Norway, but classed as a tourist town because visitors so far outnumber residents, and its shops in the old quarter may open on Sundays. There are galleries such as Galleri Ask and Galleri Smalgangen, cafés, a pub, and restaurants that open nearest the fjord in summer.
When the summer guests have gone home, the jetty, the beach below Munchs hus and the old houses by the water are still there: the same motifs Munch kept coming back to.
