At Airborne at the bridge, the name Arnhem still carries the weight of September 1944, when Allied paratroopers landed here as part of Operation Market Garden and the city found itself at the centre of the war. Monuments across town mark the places where the fighting was fiercest, and people come from far beyond the Netherlands to stand at them.
Yet ask someone who grew up here and you will hear a softer story too. Arnhem is the capital of Gelderland, spread over both banks of the Nederrijn and close to the German border, with the heath and woodland of the Hoge Veluwe National Park reaching into its northern corner. In the nineteenth century it was nicknamed the little Hague of the East, as returning traders and officers built their villas along its avenues. Days out to the Netherlands Open Air Museum or Royal Burgers' Zoo are part of almost every local childhood, and the Sabelspoort and Huis Zypendaal belong to the everyday landscape. Even Arnhem Land in Australia owes its name to this city, by way of a Dutch East India Company ship.
If Arnhem is your city, the river, the woods and the bridge are already part of you. Now they can come with you.
