Kongsvinger Railway
Glomma riverbank
Årnes is the railway village of Nes: the administrative centre of the municipality, one of its two main shopping places together with Vormsund, and home to Årnes Kornsilo & Mølle, one of the largest grain intake facilities in the country. Day to day, life runs around the station, the shops and the schools, the cultural centre with its cinema screens, and Torbjørns samlinger, a private collection of veteran vehicles and military equipment from both world wars.
The village lies on the eastern bank of the Glomma, Norway's longest river, just downstream from where it receives the Vorma. Until the Kongsvinger Railway arrived, this was farmland with a handful of buildings. Part of the fields was taken for the line and the station, and Årnes turned from a purely agricultural community into a place of trade, with a coaching inn and a trading company. A painted mural brightens the railway underpass at the entrance to the centre, restored after years of decay, and small green spaces such as Trekanten park and Bautaplassen sit among the houses.
Come in past the painted underpass by the station, with the grain silo and the river ahead, and you are home in Årnes.
