Seine riverbank
Along the Seine at Argenteuil, the light on the water is the light Claude Monet came here to paint, and the town's oldest name, Argentoialum, grew from a root meaning "silver", a fitting word for that gleaming river. Monet was not alone: Renoir, Caillebotte, Sisley and Delacroix all painted here, and Georges Braque was born in the town.
Argenteuil lies on the right bank of the Seine in the north-western suburbs of Paris, with the river running along its whole southern edge. It borders three other departments as well as its own Val-d'Oise, and climbs from the riverbank towards the hills of the Parisis. Once farmland and vineyards and a rural escape for Parisians, it industrialised and grew into the most populous commune in the Val-d'Oise. The remains of the Ancienne abbaye Notre-Dame d'Argenteuil recall the convent where it all began.
If you learned to ride a bike along the river, or still take the train home from Paris-Saint-Lazare to Argenteuil, this map is yours to wear.
