Castel del Monte
Burrata
Olives and almonds
Andria sits on the lower slopes of the Murgia, a short way inland from Barletta and the Adriatic coast, at the heart of one of the largest municipalities in Italy by area. Olive groves and vineyards run right up to the edge of town, and the rhythm of the place still follows them: this is an agricultural and service centre that lives on wine, olives and almonds, the fourth-largest municipality in Apulia.
What sets it apart is that two of its names travel far beyond it. One is the burrata di Andria, the cheese that was born here; the other is Castel del Monte, the 13th-century castle on a hill out in the Alta Murgia national park. Back in town, daily life moves between the Porta Sant'Andrea, the Torre dell'Orologio and the shade of the Villa Comunale Giuseppe Marano, while on the outskirts the Gurgo, a deep karst hollow full of caves, keeps a microclimate of its own. There is even a Museo del Confetto.
If Andria is where you first tasted burrata made that morning, or where you learnt to spot Castel del Monte on the skyline, this map is for you.
