Known for

Amsterdamse Bos

Do you know Amstelveen as the place KLM and KPMG call home, or as the green edge of Amsterdam where the woods begin? Both are true. The name itself tells you where you are: the Amstel, the same river that named Amsterdam, and veen, the peat that villagers once cut here.

The Cobra Museum is the landmark most visitors come for, but locals tend to think first of the parks. The Dr. Jac. P. Thijssepark was the first heempark in the Netherlands, planted with wild native flora and tucked just south of the Amsterdamse Bos. Amstelveen has sixteen of these gardens in all, and the Broersepark is another. The town even hosted a match of the 1999 Cricket World Cup, an unlikely chapter for a place that was never walled and so, strictly speaking, is still a village.

What stays with you is the quiet of the Thijssepark's winding paths, with the bustle of Amsterdam and Schiphol so close and yet a world away.
