Burg Alsdorf
Border triangle
Where else in Germany can you live this close to both Belgium and the Netherlands and watch old spoil heaps turn into nature reserves? Alsdorf sits near the border triangle in the far west of the country, in the district of Aachen, and its landscape is a patchwork of streams such as the Merzbach and the Broicher Bach, the ponds of Alsdorf and Mariadorf, and the heaps that coal left behind. Bergehalde Anna II, Bergehalde Maria-Hauptschacht and the Bergehalden Noppenberg und Nordstern are all protected now, green hills where pits once worked.
What makes Alsdorf unusual is how many pieces it is made of. Old villages such as Hoengen, Warden and Ofden date back to the Middle Ages, while places like Mariadorf, Busch and Kellersberg were built by the mining company between 1860 and 1960. Its history is just as layered: part Limburg, part Jülich, then Burgundy, the Habsburgs and finally Prussia. The ENERGETICON tells the mining story, and Burg Alsdorf, the old castle, is the sight everyone knows.
Coming back here means seeing the green outline of the heaps on the horizon and knowing you are home.
