Waterside living
Across the IJmeer from Amsterdam, on land that was the bed of the IJsselmeer until it was reclaimed between 1959 and 1968, Almere is the newest city in the Netherlands. Its name comes from a far older lake, the early medieval name for the Zuiderzee, and its first house was finished in 1976.
't Hoofdstrand, on the water's edge, gives a planned city an easy, holiday feel on a summer evening. Almere was laid out in boroughs rather than around a single old centre: Almere Haven, the oldest, Almere Stad, Almere Buiten, Almere Hout and Almere Poort, with green woods like the Pampushout and the Beatrixpark threaded between them. Daily life here runs on space, water and short bike rides.
When you come back across the water and see the new skyline rising out of the polder, it feels like what it is: home, built by the people who chose it.
