"Sock-city"
stocking industry
multicultural past
On the main square of Aleksandrów Łódzki, the town hall built in 1824 still does its job, and the old Jatki, where butchers and bakers once sold their goods, now form part of it. Around them sits a small town planned from scratch by Bernard von Schuttenbach.
What makes it unique is socks. Knitting firms sprang up here in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and the town became the cradle of the Polish stocking industry, earning the nickname "Sock-city" from its own residents. Textiles are still its main trade. It was also a town of many cultures: German Protestant knitters, Jewish traders and Catholic Polish craftsmen, and for Hasidic Jews the seat of the Aleksander dynasty.
The tram to Łódź has gone, but the Park 200-lecia Aleksandrowa Łódzkiego and the peat bog of Rezerwat Torfowisko Rąbień are close at hand. If you are from Sock-city, wear it with a grin.
