Lake Albano
Castelli Romani
Roman remains
Albano Laziale rises on the Alban Hills above the lake that shares its name, with Castel Gandolfo along the shore, Ariccia and Rocca di Papa as neighbours and the Roman countryside spread out below. Locals simply call it Albano, and it is one of the most important towns of the Castelli Romani: a busy shopping centre, a bishopric since the fifth century, once a principality of the Savelli family and for a century a possession of the Holy See.
The Anfiteatro Romano Albano Laziale and the Terme di Cellomaio show how far back the town goes, and the tomb known as Il sepolcro detto degli Orazi e Curiazi ad Albano adds a touch of legend. The historic centre is among the steepest of the Castelli, climbing from the cathedral of San Pancrazio to the church of San Paolo, while Villa Altieri stands on the Via Appia.
Coming home means that climb up from the Appia, through the steep streets, towards the pines of the Colle dei Cappuccini and the view of the lake.
