About Agrigento

Known for

Valley of the Temples

Known for

Luigi Pirandello

Known for

Ancient Akragas

Agrigento sits on a ridge above Sicily's southern coast, linking the Colle di Girgenti to the north with the Rupe Atenea to the east, while two rivers once flowed past the plateau towards the sea. Greek colonists from Gela chose the spot for its natural defences and called their city Akragas.

No other Sicilian city has quite what lies below its houses: a whole valley of Doric temples, part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. The Tempio della Concordia is the best known, with the Tempio di Ercole and the Tempio dei Dioscuri a short walk away. The Giardino della Kolymbetra lies among the ruins, and the Museo Archeologico Regionale Pietro Griffo holds what the digs have uncovered. Up in the town itself stands the Cattedrale di San Gerlando.

This is the birthplace of Empedocles and of Luigi Pirandello, and it was named Italian capital of culture for 2025. Look down from the town's edge and the temples line the valley between the houses and the coast.
