Afragola's medieval name, Villa Fragorum, has long been read as a place of strawberries, though one scholar has argued it means an "African passage", after the route Hannibal took through the area. Either way, people have lived on this plain north of Naples for a very long time: an early Bronze Age village here was buried by Vesuvius and found again in 2005.
Sant'Antonio, the baroque sanctuary-basilica begun in 1633, is the town's best-known building, with its marble-lined nave and its bell tower at the centre of local life. Nearby stand a castle that tradition links to Queen Joanna II of Naples, now a school, and old churches such as Santa Maria d'Ajello. Today Afragola runs into Casoria and Cardito as one continuous town, and its high-speed station, designed by Zaha Hadid, puts Rome within easy reach.
If you come from Afragola, you know the sound of Sant'Antonio's bells. This map shows the streets they carry across.
