About Aachen

Charlemagne

Known for

Aachen Cathedral

Known for

Aachener Printen

Step into the Aachener Dom and you are standing in what began as the palace chapel of Charlemagne, who made Aachen the main royal residence of the Frankish Empire and was buried here. From 936 to 1531, 31 German kings were crowned in the city. In 1978 the cathedral and its treasury became the first German site on UNESCO's World Heritage List.

What makes Aachen different is the water. Warm springs drew Celts and Romans long before Charlemagne, the Latin word for water survives in the old name Aquae Granni, and the French still call the city Aix-la-Chapelle. The springs still feed a recognised spa today. Around them sit the Elisenbrunnen, the Aachener Rathaus and the Centre Charlemagne, and since 1950 the city has awarded the Charlemagne Prize for services to European unity. It is the westernmost major city in Germany, bordering Belgium and the Netherlands, a place of carnival, of the RWTH and of Aachener Printen, the local gingerbread.

Coming home here has a taste: a bag of Printen, the cathedral above the rooftops, and two other countries just past the city limits.
